Mariana Zwarg, flutist, saxophonist, arranger and composer.
Born in a musical family for 3 generations, Mariana Zwarg began her formal studies of flute in the year 2001, after giving up the school of psychology at the end of the course. But she consider that her practicing as a musician, began long before, since she was a child, when he accompanied the daily rehearsals of “Hermeto Pascoal and group”, the group that her father “Itiberê Zwarg” has been playing for 40 years.
When she decided to dedicate herself exclusively to music, Mariana joined “Itiberê Zwarg e Orquestra Família”, group that she participated for 10 years and with which she has recorded 2 Cds, “Calendário do som” and “Contrastes”. With “Itiberê Orquestra Família” traveled through Brazil and Latin America, participating in the biggest and most important music festivals. One of the most important presentations of this epoch are Solis Theatre (Uruguay), La Trastienda (Argentina), Universidad del Litoral (Argentina), Sala São Paulo (São Paulo), Teatro Castro Alves (Salvador), Museu da Pampulha (Belo Horizonte), CCBB (Brasilia, SP and RJ), Teatro Municipal de Niterói (Rio de Janeiro), among others.
In 2009, the Itiberê Orquestra Família became “Itiberê Zwarg and group”, with a smaller lineup. With this group she recorded a CD “Identidade”, in 2011, and the a DVD “Na tela da Imaginação”, in 2013. With “Itiberê Zwarg and group” played the biggest music festivals in Brazil, Uruguay, and Europe.
Also acts as a teacher and arranger at music festivals. In 2014, has been invited to lecture at the Festival of Guaramiranga, Ceará/BR, where she was the teacher of the woodwinds. In 2015 was invited to be the “big band director” to “Tallers Musicals of Avinyo” in Spain, where she was the arranger and conductor of the big band of the festival. Even in 2015, participated, as flutist and assistant director, a major project in Helsinki, Finland: the recording of a CD in celebration of 40 years of “UMO JAZZ ORCHESTRA”, with arrangements by Itiberê Zwarg and Hermeto Pascoal solos; In addition to a concert at the summer festival of Helsinki, which was acclaimed by public and critics.
In 2016, Mariana Zwarg have started the project: “A Homage to the Universal Music of Hermeto Pascoal”. This project consists in an exchange between musicians from all over the world gathered to play Hermeto’s music. The 2016’s band was composed by musicians from Denmark, France, Spain and Brazil. All the tunes of the concert are originally arranged by Mariana Zwarg. This tour had concerts in Berlin (Zig Zag Jazz Club, Institute Jazz Berlin), Copenhagen (Copenhagen Jazz Festival) and Barcelona. In 2017 the project grew up and became “Mariana Zwarg Sexteto Universal”. The group traveled through one month in July and passed by 11 cities, in Germany, Denmark and Finland.
Parallel to the “Itiberê Zwarg and group” and “Mariana Zwarg Sexteto Universal”, Mariana Zwarg acts as an assistant and principal collaborator of Itiberê Zwarg in their workshops and their teaching jobs.
In Brazil, it acts as a flutist and saxophonist in several works (concerts, recordings and arrangements) with singers of samba, MPB, forró and bossa nova. Acts as a soloistin works with weeping and MPB and bossa nova. She also works as a music teacher, perception and puffs.
